SINOPEC Guangzhou Petrochemical to Upgrade Hydrogen Loading Rack to 30 MPa After Capacity Expansion

SINOPEC Guangzhou Petrochemical is upgrading its hydrogen loading rack to 30 MPa following the expansion of its annual hydrogen production capacity from 1,500 tonnes to 5,100 tonnes, in a move to improve hydrogen distribution and filling efficiency.

The 30 MPa upgrade project for the hydrogen loading rack at the company’s hydrogen supply centre received official filing approval on September 14. Located at No. 550 Shihua Road in Huangpu District, Guangzhou, the project has a total investment of RMB 14.99 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027 and is expected to be completed in September 2028.

The retrofit will raise the hydrogen filling pressure from 20 MPa to 30 MPa for a hydrogen flow rate of 4,000 Nm³/h. The project will include the installation of a new hydraulically driven hydrogen compressor, replacement of hydrogen filling dispensers and adaptive upgrades to supporting facilities.

SINOPEC Guangzhou Petrochemical operates SINOPEC’s first fuel-cell hydrogen production base in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The hydrogen supply centre has undergone several rounds of upgrades since its Phase I facility came online in December 2020, when it began producing hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%.

Following an expansion completed in March 2025, the centre increased its annual hydrogen production capacity from 1,500 tonnes to 5,100 tonnes, making it the largest fuel-cell hydrogen supply centre in South China. Its hydrogen supply network covers Guangzhou, Foshan, Hong Kong and surrounding areas.

The latest pressure upgrade follows the centre’s capacity expansion and is expected to further improve the efficiency of off-site hydrogen transportation and filling. It also represents another step in SINOPEC’s development of a hydrogen supply chain in the Greater Bay Area.

To date, SINOPEC has established 11 fuel-cell hydrogen supply centres nationwide, including facilities at Guangzhou Petrochemical, Yanshan Petrochemical, Tianjin Petrochemical, Qilu Petrochemical, Qingdao Refining & Chemical and Zhenhai Refining & Chemical.

The company is continuing to develop hydrogen mobility and green-hydrogen refining as two key areas of its hydrogen business, as it pursues its strategic goal of becoming “China’s leading hydrogen company.”
